The .22 rimfire mag took a long time to become common enough for economies of scale to kick in and bring the price down. Most of the 17 HMR’s can stay within that 3″ gopher pocket all the way out to 165 yards, with very little difference in trajectory between loadings. I generally start on a town with the .17 HMR, then after most of the dogs within its range are either dead or in their holes break out the .17 Hornet. But! My .22 WMR is used to hunt wild hogs on a large property where only rimfire rifles are allowed outside deer season. Of course that’s a clever play on their centerfire WSM or Winchester Short Magnum trademark. With lighter, faster projectiles, .17-caliber rimfires such as the .17 WSM and .17 HMR offer some advantages over more established rimfires like the .22 Long Rifle. Always heard these weren’t very accurate, but just read a test of the newer Savage Varmint model (Boyd’s laminated stock) and it was getting very decent groups (@ 50 yards.) I suppose Winchester was feeling left out. My 22 Hornet feels like a rifle-rifle, and my rimfires are my rimfires. With decent bullets it should kill much more effectively than a .17. 17 Hornady Magnum Rimfire or just 17 HMR is a rifle cartridge created by Hornady in 2002.
